Bath Rugby have pulled off a major coup by securing the signature of Springbok enforcer Dan du Preez from Premiership rivals Sale Sharks, bolstering their forward arsenal as they mount a serious title challenge.
The powerful loose forward brings six Test caps and a wealth of Premiership experience to The Rec, adding the kind of physical edge that could prove decisive in Bath’s quest for silverware. Currently sitting second in the Gallagher Premiership table with 41 points from 10 matches, Bath are assembling the pieces for a genuine championship assault.
Du Preez hasn’t worn the green and gold since 2021 when he faced Argentina, but his reputation as a brutal ball-carrier and set-piece enforcer remains intact. The move reunites him with fellow South African Johann van Graan, who has transformed Bath into genuine contenders since taking the reins.
“I’m really excited to be joining Bath. It’s a great club with huge ambition and incredible support behind it, and I can’t wait to get started and contribute to what the squad is building,” du Preez told the club website.
That ambition is palpable. Bath’s impressive 8-2 record this season demonstrates they’re not just participating, they’re hunting silverware with serious intent. The addition of du Preez adds another dimension to their already formidable pack.
Van Graan’s masterstroke
Johann Van Graan, who has built his Bath project around brutal efficiency and forward dominance, was visibly delighted with the capture of his compatriot.
“Our DNA is being tough to beat, and Dan du Preez fits that mould perfectly,” Van Graan explained.
“A ball-carrier, a set-piece expert, and an excellent defender, we are looking forward to seeing what Dan will add to our group in the coming years.”
That DNA has been evident throughout Bath’s campaign. They’ve built their success on precisely the kind of abrasive forward play that du Preez embodies. His ability to win collisions, dominate the gainline and provide grunt work in the tight exchanges will only enhance Bath’s already impressive physicality.
Van Graan was particularly keen to highlight du Preez’s experience and character.
“His Test and English Premiership experience will be very valuable and, most importantly, he is a brilliant family man,” Van Graan said.
That latter comment speaks volumes about the culture Van Graan is cultivating at Bath. This isn’t just about assembling talented individuals – it’s about building a squad with the right character and values to sustain a championship challenge over the long haul.
Sale’s loss, Bath’s gain
Du Preez departs Sale Sharks having made over 80 appearances for the Greater Manchester outfit, establishing himself as one of the Premiership’s most destructive forward operators. His departure will leave a significant hole in Sale’s pack, whilst simultaneously strengthening a direct rival’s title credentials.
The loose forward’s versatility across the back row gives Van Graan valuable tactical options. Whether deployed at number eight for his ball-carrying prowess or on the blindside flank for his defensive intensity, du Preez brings the kind of flexibility that proves invaluable during the gruelling Premiership campaign.
Building towards glory
With du Preez joining an already impressive Bath squad, Van Graan’s vision is crystallising. The South African coach has assembled a team built on forward dominance, defensive steel and clinical execution – the traditional ingredients of championship-winning sides.
The capture of a current Springbok (albeit one currently out of the international picture) sends a clear message to Bath’s Premiership rivals: The Rec means business. Du Preez may not have represented South Africa since 2021, but at 29, he’s entering his prime years as a forward, with plenty left in the tank.
