At least 13 people were killed when a Russian drone struck a platform at Dnipro railway station in central Ukraine on Thursday, where a civilian train was parked. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the “horrific” attack and demanded international action.
The attack wounded at least five people, according to Dnipropetrovsk regional governor Oleksandr Ganzha.
“Thirteen people were killed in a Russian attack on Dnipro. At least five more were wounded,” Ganzha said on Telegram.
Dnipro mayor Borys Filatov described the incident as a tragedy, saying the drone hit a civilian electric train.
“Many people have been killed. Lots are wounded,” he said on social media.
The state Ukrainian Railways operator confirmed a jet-powered Russian drone hit the station. The strike targeted one of the platforms where train No. 866, which runs between Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia, was stationed at the time.
Railway officials had announced an elevated threat level before the attack, according to the rail company’s chief, Oleksandr Pertsovsky.
“But unfortunately there were still a large number of people on the platform,” Pertsovsky said on Facebook.
Russia has targeted trains across Ukraine since the start of its 2022 invasion, destroying hundreds of locomotives and killing several railway workers.
In September, passengers were evacuated from more than 5 800 Ukrainian train services due to the threat of Russian drone strikes, the national railway operator told AFP.
Ukraine’s vast train network serves as a vital transport system in the country, where journeys between the east and west can take 24 hours.
