A family holiday at the popular De Hollandsche Molen Resort in Franschhoek turned into a nightmare on 21 December 2025, when a 19-year-old was allegedly assaulted in what the family claims was a racially motivated attack.

According to the complainant’s account, which has gained widespread attention on social media, the family had been camping at the resort from December 16 to 23 when tensions with other guests escalated into violence. The family alleges that certain campers had been attempting to restrict their movement and access to facilities for years, despite no such restrictions existing in the resort’s official policies.

The situation came to a head when the teenager was allegedly approached, choked, and dragged several meters by another guest. Two younger family members witnessed the attack and sought help, leading to additional confrontations as family members rushed to assist.

Captain F.C. Van Wyk, a provincial police spokesperson confirmed that a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened on the same day.

“The matter is still under investigation, with no arrests made as of yet,” Van Wyk stated.

The incident has reportedly left several family members, including minors, traumatized.

De Hollandsche Molen Resort has issued a statement characterizing the incident as “unfortunate and isolated,” emphasizing that no resort personnel were involved in the altercation.

“This incident does not reflect the character of the resort or the behavior of the majority of our visitors,” the resort stated, highlighting their longstanding reputation as a peaceful, family-oriented destination.

The resort announced several immediate measures including:

• Enhanced security measures with increased patrols during peak periods

• Improved collaboration with private security services

• Strict enforcement of conduct rules with zero tolerance for aggressive behavior

• Tightened access controls and visitor procedures

• Clear communication with homeowners and rental agents about guest responsibilities

Family’s claims

The family’s account, shared by local social media creative Yusuf Daniels, alleges that resort management initially agreed to have all parties vacate the premises but later allowed only the complainant’s family to leave while the alleged perpetrators remained.

The family claims the incident highlights broader concerns about racial discrimination and unequal treatment at the facility.
