The Democratic Alliance has submitted questions to the Free State MEC for Health Monyatso Mahlatsi regarding security measures at healthcare facilities across the province.
According to the DA’s spokesperson for Health in the Provincial Legislator David Masoeu, the Free State Department of Health has not appointed 24-hour security services at clinics, leaving facilities vulnerable to break-ins and vandalism.
In his budget speech, MEC Mahlatsi stated that security at healthcare facilities, particularly clinics, would be prioritised and that acts of vandalism would be addressed urgently. However, several clinics remain without water and electricity due to theft of plumbing pipes and electrical wiring.
The Meloding Clinic has been without electricity since 2025 following vandalism and damage to its electrical infrastructure. In response to internal questions received in May, the department confirmed it has not yet appointed 24-hour security at the facility and that no alternative power supply will be installed until security measures are in place.
A departmental response received in June identified 50 clinics across the province requiring urgent security interventions. These include 14 in Thabo Mofutsanyana, 13 in Fezile Dabi, 13 in Mangaung, eight in Lejweleputswa and two in Xhariep.
Masoeu said the DA will continue to monitor the department’s progress in appointing security services and restoring damaged infrastructure. “The continued absence of security exposes healthcare workers and patients to unnecessary danger, creating an environment where crime can flourish and undermine the safe delivery of essential healthcare services.”
