Norwegian Football Federation asks FIFA to investigate Trump peace prize

The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) has formally requested FIFA’s ethics committee to investigate the world football governing body’s decision to award a peace prize to US President Donald Trump.

The NFF announced on Tuesday it had submitted the complaint, adding pressure to FIFA president Gianni Infantino over the controversial award presented during the December 6 draw for the 2026 World Cup.

Infantino presented Trump with FIFA’s inaugural peace prize at the event, a move that prompted human rights organisation FairSquare to file a complaint later that month. The group alleged Infantino breached his duty of neutrality by supporting Trump.

FIFA has not disclosed the criteria or process used to determine the peace prize recipient. The award came during a period when Trump and his administration actively campaigned for him to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

NFF president Lise Klaveness confirmed her federation acted independently in approaching FIFA’s ethics committee, without seeking support from other national associations.

“I think others (federations) knew that they could sign it if they wanted to,” Klaveness said. “We concluded that it was useless to put pressure on anyone, it would just create friction.”

Infantino has cultivated close ties with Trump ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The FIFA president’s relationship with Trump has drawn scrutiny as the tournament approaches, with critics questioning whether such political proximity compromises FIFA’s stated neutrality.
