Ivan van Rooyen’s men demonstrated tactical maturity in containing the Irish province for the majority of the contest, only conceding late scores when the result was beyond doubt.

The bonus-point victory proves vital as the race for play-off qualification intensifies.

First-half masterclass

The Johannesburg outfit established their authority early in the match, with SJ Kotze’s powerful break setting the tone.

Quick recycling allowed Chris Smith to unleash a superb long ball to Angelo Davids, who strolled over unopposed in the corner after just five minutes.

The home side’s clinical edge was evident again on 22 minutes when Henco van Wyk showcased his individual brilliance. The dynamic back-rower spotted a gap, shrugged off a would-be tackler and accelerated away for a spectacular 45-metre effort.

Defensive resilience near their own line then sparked a flowing counter-attack, with slick passing between forwards and backs creating space for Siba Mahashe to dot down in the left corner.

The pattern continued after the break, with Erich Cronjé and van Wyk’s second strike extending the Lions’ dominance.

Connacht finally breached the home defence through Matthew Devine’s double and Paul Boyle’s effort, but these late consolations couldn’t mask the visitors’ struggles.
