The past weekend’s schoolboy rugby action has had a ripple effect on The Rugby Factory rankings, with several sides gate-crashing the top 10 and a host of movers shaking up the pecking order across South African school rugby.
Whilst the elite quartet at the summit held firm—Paarl Gim, Stellenberg, Garsfontein, and Paul Roos all delivered commanding victories to protect their top-five status, the real drama unfolded further down the rankings where upsets and statement wins triggered a major reshuffle.
Outeniqua and Oakdale are the headline climbers, both bulldozing their way into the top 10 with performances that left no doubt about their credentials. Outeniqua’s demolition of Pearson was nothing short of clinical, a 62-0 hammering that showcased the kind of ruthless efficiency that forces rankings adjustments. Oakdale, meanwhile, produced a more workmanlike but equally impressive 21-7 triumph over Durbanville to stake their claim among the nation’s elite.

But the biggest leap belongs to Jeppe. The Johannesburg powerhouse’s victory over a strong Westville outfit earned them the weekend’s most significant rankings gain, proving once again that consistency against quality opposition earns respect in this unscientific but carefully considered system.
As always, The Rugby Factory rankings carry a disclaimer: there’s no algorithm, no points system, just honest assessment based on performance and strength of schedule. Disagree? The comments section awaits your verdict on who deserves to climb, or drop.
Unbeaten streak watch
Hilton and Kearsney remain the country’s only undefeated sides, as far as current records show. But both face defining tests in the coming days.
Kearsney head to the Grey PE Festival, where a strong showing could propel them back into the top 20. Festival rugby offers the perfect stage to measure yourself against varied opposition, and the KwaZulu-Natal outfit will be desperate to make a statement.
Hilton, meanwhile, brace for a clash with Bishops this weekend. On paper, it’s Hilton’s fixture to lose. But Bishops’ gritty performance against SACS, suggests they possess the belief and bite to pull off an upset. Unlikely? Perhaps. Impossible? Absolutely not.
One can’t help but wonder what fireworks a Hilton appearance at the Wildeklawer Festival would have produced. That’s a fixture rugby fans would have circled in ink.
Top 20 new entries
Northwood’s triumph over DHS was another result that demanded recognition. The Durban school’s win punched their ticket into the top 20, reward for consistent performances against challenging opposition.
Maritzburg College also stormed into the top 20 after a spectacular takedown of Pretoria Boys High. The result sent ripples through the rankings and served notice that College are hitting their straps at exactly the right time.
The beauty of schoolboy rugby lies in its unpredictability. This weekend proved it once more. Who rises next? The pitch will decide.
The weekly rankings will be released on Thursdays. Let us know in the comments: Who deserves to be higher? Who’s ranked too generously? The debate starts now.
