SPRINGBOK – After surrendering to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), two men and two companies have been charged with fraud, forgery, uttering, and corruption.
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Nomthandazo Mnisi said Steven Johnson Julie (49), a former foreman for refuse removal at the Nama Khoi Municipality in Springbok, and George Dewald McDonald (66), along with his two companies JLK Business Consulting and BCM Property Investment, made a brief appearance before the Springbok Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 18 March.
This followed the accused surrendering at the Hawks’ offices in Springbok, where they were charged by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation team.
It is alleged that between March 2020 and October 2021, the former municipal employee assisted the company’s director in submitting 32 fraudulent quotations to the municipality to ensure that he and his companies would be the preferred candidates for services valued under R30 000 per job in and around the Springbok area. As a result, the municipality suffered a total loss of R893 134-85.
The accused were each granted R5 000 bail, and the case has been postponed to Wednesday 22 April for consultation with attorneys.
