Firefighters battled intensely to contain the fierce blaze that tore through Vergelegen’s Stables restaurant on Tuesday 3 March.

The Stables restaurant at Vergelegen in Somerset West will be closed to patrons until further notice following a devastating fire late Tuesday afternoon (3 March).

The wine estate confirmed the closure in a statement issued via its social media platforms after the blaze erupted at the popular restaurant.

Frank Forbay, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, said they received an emergency call at 15:46.

“Six fire engines, two water tankers and 35 firefighters were dispatched, along with an Incident Management Team,” said Forbay. “On arrival, crews found the thatched-roof kitchen engulfed in flames.”

Forbay further disclosed that the kitchen was completely destroyed, with the adjacent bar area suffering water damage. The incident was declared closed at 01:42 on Wednesday morning 4 March.

All patrons and staff were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Vergelegen confirmed it is cooperating with authorities who will commence damage assessments once the site is secure.

“Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our guests, employees and the surrounding community remains our foremost priority,” the statement said. “We will provide further updates as soon as additional verified information becomes available.”
