HUMANSDORP – The Acting Sarah Baartman District Commissioner has welcomed the sentencing of 10 members of the , following their conviction for the murder of Jason “Yskas” Heynes (25) outside a popular club in Humansdorp in November 2022.

Ten members of the “Die 18 Varke” gang were sentenced for murder.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said that on 26 February, the Humansdorp Regional Court imposed hefty sentences on the 10 accused for the attack and stabbing of Heynes on 19 November 2022 in Jacob Street, Arcadia, Humansdorp.

“Heynes sustained multiple stab wounds and succumbed to his injuries,” said Nkohli.

He said that 12 men were initially nabbed for Heynes’ murder, but the other two have since died in separate gang-related violence incidents while they were out on bail.

Nkohli said that in 2025, following their conviction, the accused had their bail revoked and were remanded in custody.

He said that life imprisonment was imposed on two of the accused, Tyrone Williams (22) and Bradley Moses (27), while John Breda (21), Juvandre Witbooi (24), Breyton Geswint (21), Whayvaun Booysen (21), Baron Moses (21) and Bkorn De Jong (21) were sentenced to 23 years of direct imprisonment.

Nkohli said that the remaining two accused, who were minors at the time of the offence, were also sentenced.

Ali Ahmed (20) was sentenced to nine years and four months of direct imprisonment, and Cashane Swarts (19) was sentenced to eight years and 20 months of direct imprisonment.

Acting Sarah Baartman District Commissioner Brigadier Asogran Naidoo said, “Gangsterism is devastating communities, and this court’s ruling will definitely cause a huge dent in gang-related activities, especially in areas such as Humansdorp.”

“Schools and universities are better facilities for youth than Correctional Centres,” said Naidoo.
