KURUMAN – Two suspects allegedly linked to robberies in Kathu, Kuruman, Mothibistad and Vryburg were arrested during an inter-provincial roadblock operation.
During a roadblock operation on Thursday 26 February, police stopped 224 vehicles and searched 310 people. Officers stopped and searched a silver VW Polo with two male occupants.
When police searched the vehicle, they discovered a bag containing multiple mobile phones, a firearm and cash. The suspects could not provide a valid explanation for possessing the mobile phones and firearm, which was later identified as a toy gun.
Further investigation revealed that the suspects were allegedly linked to robberies committed the previous day, on 25 February, in Kathu, Kuruman, Mothibistad and Vryburg.
The vehicle’s details were circulated and it was confirmed as a rental car from Avis Rent-a-car. The suspects, aged 29 and 30, were arrested for possession of suspected stolen mobile phones, unlawful possession of a firearm and armed robbery, according to Captain Nomvuyo Makoloi of Mothibistad police.

On the same day, a 34-year-old man was arrested after the taxi he was travelling in from Johannesburg to Namibia was stopped at the roadblock and thoroughly searched.
Mandrax tablets worth R28 500, Tik with an estimated street value of R75 000 and dagga valued at R24 000 were found in his luggage, leading to his arrest.
The joint inter-provincial roadblock consisted of police officers from Kathu, Siyathemba and Olifantshoek, as well as Northern Cape Provincial Traffic and Safety personnel.
All suspects will appear in court soon.
