CAPE TOWN – Gugulethu police registered a murder case following a shooting incident that occurred at NY 108 in Gugulethu on Wednesday 25 February, at 14:50.

Provincial police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana said according to reports the suspect and victim were arguing, which resulted in the unidentified male being shot several times in his upper body and declared dead on the scene.

“The suspect fled the scene and no arrest had been made and investigation was still ongoing,” he said.

A Gugulethu Community Policing Forum (CPF) member, speaking on condition of anonymity since they are not mandated speak to the media, said they suspected the shooting was extortion-related. They said the deceased was known to be someone going around extorting money from local businesses.

“According to information received from the community the deceased was one of the gang groups collecting money from the local businesses. But it is not clear why he was killed.” They said shooting incidents were the norm in the area.

The source urged the community to work closely with law-enforcement officers.

“Looking at the recent crime statistics (third quarter crime statistics) released by the Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia on murder, Gugulethu is sitting in position 5 nationally. In the province itself it is number 4. It tells us that people are dying here and there is a lot that needs to be done.” They appealed to all community stakeholders to work together.
