Gugulethu triple murder raises safety concerns in New Crossroads

CAPE TOWN – Gugulethu police have opened a triple murder case following a shooting incident on Nontulo Street in New Crossroads on Monday 13 April.

Provincial police spokesperson, Col André Traut, confirmed that authorities are deeply concerned about the incident.

“At approximately 20:22, officers responded to a complaint at Nontulo Street, New Crossroads, where they discovered the bodies of two victims – a man and a woman – inside a residence. Both had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper body. A third man was found outside the premises with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. The deceased men are aged 33 and 46,” said Traut.

The motive for the attack is currently unknown and remains under investigation.

Traut added that detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit have been assigned to the case and will pursue all available leads with urgency to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Community shaken by Gugulethu triple murder incident

A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, said residents are shocked and alarmed by the incident.

He noted a growing pattern of violent crime in the area.

“The killings are becoming a serious problem. Three weeks ago, there was another shooting where three people were killed and one injured. New Crossroads is becoming a danger zone,” he said.

Gugulethu triple murder possibly linked to extortion

He further suggested that the attack could be linked to extortion activities.

“The way the shooting was carried out resembles how extortion groups operate. When they strike, they often target multiple victims, sometimes entire families,” he added.

Despite the speculation, he urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and leave no stone unturned.
