Christmas comes once a year, but for Maskandi music lovers in Khayelitsha and surrounding areas, it’s a different story as they gear up for a big event next week.
All roads will lead to Khayelitsha Rugby Stadium, where fans will gather to watch some of the biggest names in Maskandi music share the stage at the Khayelitsha Maskandi Festival on Saturday 25 April.
For the first time in Khayelitsha, an event of this kind will be held during this time of the year.
Khayelitsha Maskandi Festival lineup excites fans
Some of the well-known Maskandi artists expected to perform include Khuzani Mpungose, Mthandeni SK, Shwi Nomtekhala, and Umafikizolo. Local talent, including Tornado, will also take to the stage.
Event organiser Thabo Smouse described the festival as a humdinger, saying it is truly one of a kind.
“We have a variety of Maskandi artists. We’ve blended national and local talent. It is strictly Maskandi – it’s a cultural event,” said Smouse.
A growing cultural event in Khayelitsha
He added that they plan to host the event twice a year. Traditionally held in November, the growing interest from fans has inspired them to expand.
“This is the first time we’re hosting it in April. From this year onwards, our plan is to host it twice a year – in April and November. We will push it and see how fans respond,” he said.
Event details and tickets
The event is set to start at 11:00 and run until late, giving music lovers plenty of time to enjoy the experience. Food stalls will also be available for attendees to purchase refreshments.
