JOHANNESBURG – The South African school rugby community is reeling after the tragic death of Jude Stewart, a much-loved Helpmekaar College player who passed away on Wednesday, 18 February, following a collapse during rugby practice.
Stewart, 15, embodied everything school rugby represents. Born in Johannesburg and a vital member of the Helpmekaar rugby team, he lived for the game and the brotherhood it created. One of his coaches described him as someone who played not just with skill, but with heart, a young man who treasured his teammates as much as the sport itself.
Helpmekaar College confirmed the heartbreaking news via Facebook on Thursday, 19 February, paying tribute to a student who represented the very best of their values. A teacher at the school remarked that Stewart embodied the principles taught at Helpmekaar, his deep sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship earning him respect across the rugby fraternity.
The outpouring of grief has been overwhelming. Classmates, teachers, coaches, and other schools have flooded social media with tributes remembering Stewart not just for his athletic prowess, but for his kindness, friendliness, and unwavering support for those around him. His leadership qualities and generous spirit touched everyone who crossed his path.
“Jude was not just a player, he was a boy with heart, respect and character. It was a privilege to be his coach. He always gave his all, on and off the field. To my team from last year, hold on to each other during this time. You were his people, his brothers. Carry each other as he was always there for you.
Rest in peace, champion. Your impact will live on in everyone who knew you,” said Christiaan Gouws, who coached Jude in 2025.
Hoërskool Marais Viljoen posted a moving tribute: “On behalf of the management, staff, learners and parents of Hoërskool Marais Viljoen, we send our deepest condolences to Jude’s family, friends and everyone at Helpmekaar. We hope that you will find strength and comfort in the precious memories, the love he shared, and the support of each other during this difficult time.
You are in our thoughts and prayers”
Hoërskool Dr. EG Jansen shared their condolences with equal tenderness: “No words can fully ease the pain and loss at this time, but we pray that you will find comfort in the beautiful memories, the impact he made, and the support of each other. May you experience strength and peace in the midst of this difficult time.”
The tributes speak volumes about Stewart’s impact beyond the rugby field. In a sport that demands physicality and toughness, he stood out for his humanity and warmth. Fellow players from other schools have described him as someone who elevated every match he played, through genuine sportsmanship and respect.
Tragically, Stewart’s death marks the second devastating loss in South African school rugby within months. In December 2025, 17-year-old Kungawo Booi collapsed during a school rugby match in Gqeberha. Despite immediate medical attention, the Westering High School player passed away shortly after emergency responders arrived.
School rugby has lost one of its brightest lights. Rest in peace, Jude Stewart. You were loved, you will be remembered, and you will be deeply missed.
