CAPE TOWN – Residents of Samora Machel have mixed feelings about the state of the area’s roads, some describing them as appalling while others praise the City for its great work.

Resident Phindile Mdolwana accused the City of neglect, that it is misleading the community by focusing on the main streets only.

“As we speak the City is maintaining Oliver Tambo Road. And if you look at the small streets there are a lot of potholes and stagnant sewage.”

Another resident, Zukiswa Phuthuma, praised the City, saying Samora Machel had changed a lot as a result.

“We can’t run away from the fact that some of our streets are bad. But let’s give credit where it’s due. The City is trying its best to maintain the streets. Look at Oliver Tambo and other streets looking better.”

She admitted, though, that much still needed to be done. Phuthuma lambasted the discarding of objects in drains, which gives rise to sewage problems on the streets.

Ward 33 councillor Lungisa Somdaka said the City was on a mission to maintain all the streets of the area. He said it was focusing on the main roads before turning to the smaller streets.

“There is a project that is going to start soon before the end of this financial year, when the City will fill all potholes and open stormwater drains.”

Somdaka said crime also had an impact on the progress made in the area.
