WESSELSBRON – The police in Wesselsbron town in the Free State have arrested a 42-year-old woman from the Monyakeng township for possession of drugs which include Mandrax tablets and Crystal Meth (Tik). The police arrested the suspect yesterday – Friday, 6 February, acting on reliable information received about her trading in drugs.

Sgt. Mahlomola Kareli, provincial spokesperson for the Free State police, said members of the Welkom Public Order Police (POP), Platoon 1, Section 1, discovered drugs inside a pink side bag in her possession. He said in addition, members discovered an undisclosed amount of cash, believed to be proceeds from drug sales.

Kareli said members received reliable information about two women trading in drugs, culminating the arrest of the one suspect.

“The arrest followed intelligence-led information regarding two females allegedly selling drugs in the area. Upon arrival, officers spotted a female sitting outside a house. A search was conducted, during which Mandrax tablets and Crystal Meth (Tik) were discovered inside a pink side bag in her possession,” said Kareli.

He said the woman was charged with possession and dealing in drugs, adding that the suspect was expected to appear in the Wesselsbron Magistrates’Court soon.

Both Mandrax (methaqualone) and Crystal Meth (methamphetamine) are widely and easily available on the street in South Africa. Reports have further revealed that SA has a significant illicit drug market for both substances.
