CAPE TOWN – For the first time in history the Cape Organisation of the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) completed the festive season with no major accident reported on the road.

Codeta spokesperson Makhosandile Tumana said the association ascribed this good fortune to the power of prayer. He said before the peak season it hosted a massive prayer gathering at Mew Way Hall in Khayelitsha, with all community stakeholders praying for safety on the roads.

“It shows everything is possible with God. We believe this massive prayer session held as we were approaching the festive season helped a lot. For the first time, since the association was established in 1992, we have a clean slate [following the holiday season], with no accident reported. To us it means a lot.”

He said Codeta ensured all its vehicles were roadworthy and their drivers got enough rest. He expressed the association’s gratitude to all faithful commuters who firmly believe in the value of the service it provides.

“Our taxis belong to the commuters. We are nothing without them [commuters]. And we ensure we take their grievances seriously when they report to us.”

The leader of Lukhanyiselo Zion Church of God in Site B, and deputy chair of Sub-District Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum, Nozikhungo Tshona, said she wished all taxi associations could see and trust in the power of God and all He can accomplish in humanity. She said it is not human power that prevents road accidents from occurring but the will of God.

“We are delighted to hear that after we gathered and spoke to God. He (God) heard our cry. We also thank our forefathers for being with the taxi operators and commuters on the road.”

Tshona urged taxi drivers to stop killing one another and find a way to resolve their differences.
