A local Cape Town Kung Fu champion will receive top honours this year, being inducted into the World Action Martial Arts Hall of Fame and Honors in America later this month.
Goodwood resident, Shifu Muhammad Junaid Chafeker, also known as M.J Li, was invited to attend Action Martial Arts Magazine’s 25th anniversary event, the most prestigious martial arts gathering in the world, taking place in Atlantic City, New Jersey from 31 January to 1 February where he will be formally inducted.
M.J is the founder of the M.J Li Kung Fu Foundation, a registered non-profit organisation. He launched the NPO a decade ago, where his major focus has been offering up his time for free, training youth from disadvantaged communities across the Western Cape, Gauteng and Tshwane.
In his 30 years practising Kung Fu, M.J has won more than 30 gold medals for South Africa. He has also represented the country in more than 14 World Championships across four continents.
M.J is a three-time Undefeated Legends of Kung Fu World Champion, IKF World Cup Champion, Africa Kung Fu Champion, and World Chin Woo Kung Fu Champion. He is also a four-time Hong Kong International Wushu Kung Fu Champion.
He will now be formally inducted into the World Action Martial Arts Hall of Fame and Honors and will receive a prestigious award. He will become the first Muslim Kung Fu champion from South Africa and Africa to be inducted.
Former world champions and movie stars that have been inducted over the years include Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Don the Dragon Wilson, Cynthia Rothrock, Benny The Jet and Bill Superfoot Wallace, to name a few.
He leaves South Africa on Thursday 29 January to attend the event.
