Makhaza police registered a murder case for investigation after the body of a 30-year-old male was found in a wheelie bin in a river near SST in Town Two, Khayelitsha on Wednesday 21 January around 10:30.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said the victim had multiple injuries to his body and was declared deceased on scene by medical personnel. “The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrests have been made,” he said.

A community local – Thabisa (she did not want to provide her surname) described the incident as shocking. She said it was the first time such an incident happened in the area since she arrived five years ago.

“We don’t know this person. I think he was killed somewhere, and the perpetrators brought him here in the wheelie bin and dumped the body. The body was still fully clothed. I don’t know if he was strangled or stabbed,” she said, adding that the incident put their area on the map for the wrong reasons.

Thabisa stated that crime is not that bad in the area. “Only small robberies that are happening here. Most of the incidents occurred at night because it’s dark,” she explained. Thabisa urged police to ensure that the culprits are arrested.
