Stellenbosch Football Club have secured one of South African football’s most decorated coaches after confirming Gavin Hunt’s appointment as their new first-team head coach with immediate effect.

The 61-year-old tactician replaces Steve Barker, who departed earlier this month.

Hunt’s appointment represents a significant statement of intent from Stellenbosch as they aim to build upon recent progress.

CEO Rob Benadie expressed his delight at securing Hunt’s services, emphasising the thorough recruitment process undertaken by the club. “We are delighted to welcome a coach of Gavin Hunt’s calibre and experience to Stellenbosch,” Benadie stated. “After conducting a thorough process, our board is confident that we have secured the right head coach for Stellenbosch FC.”

Hunt brings an exceptional pedigree to his new role, boasting four Premiership titles, two Nedbank Cups, an MTN8 trophy, and a Telkom Knockout triumph among his honours. The Cape Town native has also claimed six PSL Coach of the Season accolades throughout his distinguished career.

The veteran coach made history earlier this year by becoming the first manager to oversee 1,000 matches in the Premier Soccer League, highlighting his remarkable longevity in South African football’s top flight since the 1998-99 season.

Hunt expressed his enthusiasm about joining Stellenbosch, recognising the club’s ambitious vision. “I am honoured to be joining Stellenbosch FC at this exciting time,” he commented. “This is a forward-thinking club with a clear vision, and from my first conversations with the CEO and staff, I could sense the ambition and support structures in place.”

The experienced tactician emphasised his commitment to delivering success for the club’s supporters. “The Winelands deserve success and I’m committed to giving everything I have to bring silverware and memorable moments to our supporters,” Hunt declared.

His extensive managerial experience includes successful spells with SuperSport United, Bidvest Wits, Kaizer Chiefs, and Moroka Swallows, among others. Hunt began his coaching journey with local sides Seven Stars and Hellenic after concluding a 13-year playing career.

Hunt will make his debut as Stellenbosch head coach on 20 January 2026 when the team travels to face Sekhukhune United at New Peter Mokaba Stadium in a Betway Premiership encounter.

The club confirmed that further details regarding Hunt’s coaching staff and his inaugural press conference will be announced shortly.
