EAST LONDON – An eight-year-old boy’s life was tragically cut short on 22 December when he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while attempting to cross a road in Amalinda, East London.
According to Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose, it is alleged that the child was struck by a vehicle while walking alone and attempting to cross the road.
“He died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and fled,” said Binqose.
Condemning the incident, Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha described the tragedy as heartbreaking and deeply disturbing.
“The loss of an eight-year-old child in such a senseless hit-and-run incident is heartbreaking and deeply disturbing. No family should ever have to endure this kind of pain, especially because of such reckless and inhumane behaviour,” said Nqatha.
“I strongly condemn the driver who fled the scene instead of taking responsibility and seeking help. I urge anyone with information to come forward so that justice can be served, and I appeal to all motorists to remember that our roads must protect the most vulnerable among us, especially our children.”
Binqose said this senseless act has left the family and the broader community devastated, as relatives now grapple with the unimaginable pain of losing a young life under such horrific circumstances.
“Hit-and-run incidents not only rob families of their loved ones but also deny them justice and closure. Authorities are urging anyone with information that may assist in locating the vehicle or driver involved to come forward,” said Binqose.
He further said the department urges parents, guardians, and all adults to take extra care in supervising children and assisting them when crossing roads, particularly in residential areas.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family during this difficult time,” said Binqose.
