The Sharks secured a dramatic 21-12 victory over the Bulls in their United Rugby Championship round 7 clash at Durban, maintaining their winning momentum following last week’s triumph over Saracens.
Both teams began cautiously, resembling heavyweight boxers feeling each other out before landing decisive blows. The Bulls struck first in the 12th minute with a powerful maul, but the Sharks defence held firm.

The opening try arrived through spectacular individual brilliance. A poor Sharks lineout in the 15th minute gave the Bulls attacking possession, with Jeandre Rudolph making ground before being tackled. However, Hakeem Kunene seized the moment, intercepting a wayward Bulls pass and sprinting 70 metres to score beneath the posts, giving the Sharks a 7-0 lead.
Handré Pollard responded immediately for the Bulls, successfully converting a 19th-minute penalty to reduce the deficit to 7-3. The experienced Bulls front row earned another scrum penalty in the 23rd minute, which Pollard expertly slotted to narrow the gap further to 7-6.
The Sharks threatened again in the 26th minute when Jordan Hendrikse broke tackles and found Ethan Hooker, who released Kunene near the try line. Pepsi Buthelezi appeared to score on the next phase, but the Television Match Official ruled the try invalid due to Kunene’s earlier knock-on.
David Kriel received a yellow card in the 29th minute for a deliberate knock-down, temporarily reducing the Bulls to 14 men. Despite this setback, the Bulls’ dominant scrummaging, led by Gerhard Steenkamp and Wilco Louw, continued to trouble the Sharks.
Pollard’s reliable boot gave the Bulls a 9-7 half-time lead after successfully converting a 37th-minute penalty, though he missed another attempt on the stroke of half-time.
The Bulls extended their advantage to 12-7 in the 57th minute when Pollard converted yet another penalty. However, the Sharks rallied magnificently in the final stages.
With 10 minutes remaining, Siya Kolisi powered over the try line to reclaim the lead at 14-12, energising the home crowd. The decisive moment arrived in the 78th minute when Jaden Hendrikse executed a perfectly weighted chip kick over a ruck, allowing Edwill van der Merwe to collect and score, extending the lead to 21-12.
The Bulls mounted a late charge seeking a consolation score, but the Sharks’ resolute defence secured a well-deserved victory, continuing their impressive home form against the Bulls.
