Cape Town has secured its position as South Africa’s premier urban destination, earning recognition as the country’s only city to make the cut in Resonance Consultancy’s prestigious World’s Best Cities report for 2025.

The Mother City’s inclusion in the global Top 100 rankings reflects a remarkable transformation driven by surging tourism, ambitious infrastructure projects, and growing international recognition of its unique blend of natural beauty and urban sophistication.

The annual World’s Best Cities report, now in its eleventh year, bases its rankings on perception data from 21,000 global residents, combined with factors that attract prime-age populations, visitor expenditure, and business formation. Cape Town’s achievement places it alongside international powerhouses, with London retaining the top spot for the eleventh consecutive year, followed by New York and Paris.

“Our Best Cities ranking identifies cities that are most desirable for locals, visitors, and businesspeople alike,” said Chris Fair, President and CEO of Resonance Consultancy. The report serves as “strategic intelligence” for leaders making decisions about capital allocation, location strategy, and destination marketing.

Cape Town’s tourism sector has experienced unprecedented growth, with visitor access surging across all fronts. The city concluded its record-breaking 2024/25 cruise season with 83 ship calls and a remarkable 16% increase in passengers and crew numbers – clear evidence of its growing appeal to international travelers.

The aviation sector tells a similar success story. Norse Atlantic has extended its London-Cape Town route and scaled operations to up to six weekly flights during peak season, responding to strong demand for direct access to the city.

Major infrastructure developments are positioning Cape Town for continued growth. Cape Town International Airport is set to begin a multi-year runway and terminal expansion in 2026, addressing current capacity constraints that have previously limited the city’s accessibility rankings.

“Expect the city’s dismal airport ranking to improve in short order,” noted the Resonance Consultancy report, highlighting how these improvements will enhance Cape Town’s competitive position.

The city’s urban landscape is undergoing significant transformation, with new developments showcasing Cape Town’s growing prosperity. A mixed-use project in Green Point entered public consultation in 2025, strategically located near the popular Sea Point Promenade and DHL Stadium.

The V&A Waterfront continues to evolve as a world-class destination. The Table Bay Hotel’s comprehensive renovation will see it relaunch as the InterContinental Table Bay in December 2025, anchoring broader improvements to the waterfront precinct.

International luxury brands are taking notice of Cape Town’s affluent market. Dolce & Gabbana from the LVMH stable and Gucci will occupy a new dedicated luxury wing at the V&A Waterfront – three times larger than the previous space. This expansion reflects growing confidence in the spending power of South Africa’s second-largest city.

While urban developments grab headlines, Cape Town’s natural environment continues to be a major asset. The city maintains a Top 14 global ranking for Nature and Parks, with Table Mountain, pristine beaches, and the surrounding winelands offering residents and visitors unparalleled access to outdoor experiences.

The combination of world-class natural beauty with increasingly sophisticated urban amenities positions Cape Town as a unique global destination where mountain meets ocean, and African culture blends with international sophistication.

As Cape Town continues to attract international attention and investment, the city appears well-positioned to climb even higher in future global rankings. With major infrastructure projects underway and growing recognition of its appeal to residents, tourists, and businesses alike, the Mother City is cementing its status as not just South Africa’s best urban destination, but one of the world’s most desirable cities to live, visit, and do business.

The recognition from Resonance Consultancy validates what locals have long known – Cape Town offers a quality of life and urban experience that rivals any city in the world, wrapped in a setting of unmatched natural beauty.
