POTCHEFSTROOM – A multidisciplinary police team acts on tip-off to foil crime on R559 road.
A coordinated operation by multiple law enforcement agencies has resulted in the arrest of six suspects allegedly involved in hijacking a meat transport truck valued at more than R500,000 bound for Potchefstroom.
The suspects, ranging in age from 28 to 48, allegedly hijacked the vehicle on Thursday, 30 October, on the R559 road between Carletonville and Randfontein at approximately 07:45.

The successful operation involved an extensive multidisciplinary team comprising cross-border enforcement officers, Crime Intelligence operatives from the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, the Drug Task Team, Tactical Response Team (TRT) Klerksdorp, Johannesburg K9 unit, Carletonville Detectives, Gauteng West Rand District Rural Safety personnel, and private security companies.
Colonel Adéle Myburgh, spokesperson for the South African Police Service in North West Province, confirmed that the team had acted upon intelligence regarding the planned hijacking.
“The team pounced on the suspects shortly after the truck was hijacked and confiscated the truck, which was loaded with meat,” Myburgh stated.
The police also confiscated three additional vehicles that were allegedly used in the commission of the crime.

The arrested individuals are scheduled to appear before the Carletonville Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 3 November 2025, facing charges of hijacking and kidnapping.
Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Ryno Naidoo commended the team’s efforts, praising the coordinated and multidisciplinary approach that led to the successful arrests in combating and preventing crime in the region.
The operation demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and inter-agency cooperation in addressing organised criminal activity on major transport routes.
