The Free State police are investigating the murder of a 71-year-old woman in Frankfort.

A Cuban doctor working at Thabazimbi Hospital appeared in court on Monday following allegations that she stole medication worth nearly R1 800 from the medical facility where she was employed.

Dr Yamilet Castaneda (54) faced theft charges at the Thabazimbi Magistrates’ Court but was released on warning. The case has been postponed until 28 November to allow for further investigation.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi, said that the incident that led to her arrest took place on 2 September, during what began as a routine security check. At approximately 06:45, a security officer at the hospital’s main entrance discovered unauthorised medication in Dr Castaneda’s personal bag during a standard search procedure.

Hospital management was immediately notified, prompting a more thorough investigation that included a search of the doctor’s office. This additional search yielded more medication, bringing the total value of recovered items to R1 780.87.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about medication security at public healthcare facilities across Limpopo province. Police investigations into the matter are continuing as authorities work to establish the full extent of the alleged theft.

The NPA emphasised that the case demonstrates their commitment to pursuing criminal allegations regardless of an accused person’s professional status or position.

“All allegations of criminal conduct will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the Malabi stated, reinforcing that no individual is above legal scrutiny.
