A recent social media poll by 1Life has revealed that 68% of South Africans experience stress and anxiety because of money, highlighting the deep link between financial pressure and mental health.
According to Hayley Parry, Money Coach and Facilitator at 1Life’s Truth About Money, these findings are not surprising:
“Money worries remain one of the biggest triggers for stress and relationship strain. The good news is that with small, consistent changes, South Africans can take back control – both financially and emotionally.”
Parry shared five simple ways to start improving your financial wellbeing – and ease the mental burden that comes with money stress:
- Face your finances. Don’t avoid your money situation – understanding what you owe and what you earn is the first step to clarity.
- Create a budget that works for you. Track your spending and set realistic goals that align with your lifestyle.
- Build a small emergency fund. Even saving a few hundred rand a month can cushion unexpected shocks.
- Talk about money. Open conversations with family or a financial coach can help reduce shame and anxiety.
- Invest in your knowledge. Financial education empowers better decisions and builds long-term confidence.
