President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his condolences to the governments and people of Zimbabwe and Malawi following a tragic bus crash near Makhado, Limpopo, on Sunday.

According to reports, 42 people lost their lives when a bus travelling from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape to Zimbabwe and Malawi overturned on the N1 on Sunday afternoon. Dozens of passengers were also injured in the crash.

In a statement, President Ramaphosa said his thoughts were with the families, friends and colleagues of those who died, and he wished the injured a full and speedy recovery.

“This incident is a tragedy for South Africa and our sister states of Zimbabwe and Malawi alike.”

He added that the crash was especially saddening as it occurred during Transport Month – a period dedicated to promoting road safety across the country.

“Our roads are also economic networks that bring the people of our region together across our national borders,” Ramaphosa said. “We must do everything we can as road users, transport operators, drivers and passengers to ensure that we stay safe and share our roads responsibly and with care for one another.”
