WELKOM – At just 16 years old, Jevanho Motaung is making a name for himself as one of South Africa’s most promising high jumpers.
He is a Gr.11 learner at the Goudveld-Hoërskool in Welkom and is currently ranked and tenth nationally.
His journey began with a leap of faith − not just his own, but that of a teacher who saw his potential early on.
“I was still a learner at Riebeeckstad Primary School when one of the teachers introduced me to high jump. She is the reason, and she still plays a big role in my life and development as an athlete,” says Jevanho.
Before joining Goudveld, he attended Welkom-Gimnasium.
Jevanho has represented the Free State six times. His personal best as a national high jumper is 1,95m.
His talent also earned him a spot at the European Youth Athletics Tour in Sweden, but due to financial restraints he could not go.
Jevanho’s dream is to one day compete internationally.
For now, he is keeping his faith strong, and working to inspire others in his community.
“It doesn’t matter where you come from − Bronville, a small school, or a tight budget.
“If you have the passion, you will go far,” he believes.
