BETHLEHEM – A Nigerian man, Ezeagu Adolphus (46), was arrested for his suspected role in the dealings of the drug Cat, worth an estimated R3.2 million. He is remanded in custody while the Free State police continue with their intensive investigation regarding his involvement, and attempt to dismantle the trafficking of the addictive substance.

Adolphus is set to reappear in the Bethlehem Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 28 July, facing charges of drug possession and trafficking.

He first appeared in court on Monday, 21 July, when the matter was postponed as part of the police’s investigation into the illicit drug trading. The police’s K9 and Crime Intelligence units in Bethlehem arrested him on Thursday, 17 July.

WO Mmako Mophiring, police spokesperson, said the police members acted on intelligence-driven information about a person in possession of drugs.

“The police identified the suspect in a vehicle with a Gauteng registration. It was intercepted at about 17:30, on the R26 road outside the Bohlokong township after the driver attempted to evade the police. However, swift action by members led to his arrest. Upon a search of the suspect’s vehicle, members discovered plastic bags containing the drug Cat, weighing 10 kg. The drugs discovered have an estimated street value of R3.2 million,” said Mophiring. He said that in addition to that, Adolphus was found in possession of an undisclosed amount of cash.

“The vehicle used in the trafficking of the drugs was also seized, thus preventing large quantities of drugs hitting the streets,” said Mophiring.
