A 22-year-old man is expected to appear in the Ficksburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (27 October) in connection with the alleged murder of a 49-year-old woman in Meqheleng, near Ficksburg, in the Free State.
The body of Mophina Molise was discovered in a yard in Zone 2, Meqheleng, at about 08:00 on Sunday (25 October). According to the police, she had a severe open wound to her throat. Her husband and son identified her at the scene.
Molise’s husband told the police he had last seen her at a local tavern on Saturday night (24 October). He said when he went looking for her the following morning he found her lying motionless in the yard.
The 22-year-old suspect was arrested on Sunday evening following preliminary investigations. He has been charged with murder, while a rape case is also being investigated.
A post-mortem examination reportedly confirmed sexual assault.
The police have urged community members to allow the legal process to take its course and refrain from taking the law into their own hands. They have also called on the community to support the family and victims of gender-based violence while allowing court proceedings to continue peacefully.
