A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of 73-year-old Mariette Mouton. Mouton was found dead in her Bredasdorp home by her husband.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday 29 September, according to Thembakazi Mdukana of provincial police. Mdukana confirmed that the suspect appeared in the Bredasdorp Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 1 October.
After working on their home garden on Monday 21 September, Mouton’s husband found her dead inside their home in Republic Street.
Police previously said access to the residence appeared to have been gained through an unlocked back door and that items were reported missing from the house.

Bredasdorp police subsequently registered cases of murder and house robbery and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mouton’s death.
In a statement by her family following her death, her loved ones shared their distraught saying that her life had been taken “so cruelly in the place where she should have been safest”.
Police did not provide details on the suspect’s identity.
