BLOEMFONTEIN – At least ten Zimbabwean nationals are still hospitalised at two hospitals in Bloemfontein, receiving medical care after surviving a fatal bus crash on the N1 highway in the Free State last Thursday. They were admitted to Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital and Universitas Academic Hospital with severe injuries sustained when the 78-seater passenger bus overturned approximately 24 km north of Trompsburg en route to Edenburg.

Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the provincial Department of Health, said passengers who are still hospitalised are being treated for severe injuries and have been receiving intensive care. The bus was travelling from Cape Town, transporting Zimbabwean nationals to their home country.

Mvambi said that on Sunday, the hospitalised patients received a compassionate visit from the Consul-General of Zimbabwe in Johannesburg, South Africa, Eria Phiri, who was accompanied by the Head of the Department of Health, Ernest Mohlahlo.

The death toll remains at 11 after a 47-year-old woman died in hospital on Friday, while ten reportedly died at the accident scene. Those who survived with minor injuries were treated and discharged, and continued their journey on another bus that was allocated.
Mvambi said that a significant progress has been made for an arrangement for the identification of the deceased by their respective families.
