The Junior Springboks have taken a page straight from their senior counterparts’ playbook, delivering a statement performance just days after the Springboks demolished the Barbarians 54-7 on Saturday. The young South Africans announced their intentions at the World Rugby U20 Championship with an emphatic 73-17 victory over Australia in their Pool A opener in Calvisano on Sunday.
In sweltering Italian conditions, the Junior Boks ran in an impressive 11 tries to overwhelm their Australian opponents, showcasing the depth and talent flowing through South African rugby. The performance mirrored the senior team’s clinical display against the Barbarians, suggesting the Springbok production line is in excellent health.
SA U20 coach Kevin Foote was beaming after his charges’ dominant display, particularly praising their physical conditioning in the extreme heat and humidity.
“The conditions were tough, but we managed our nutrition and hydration well,” Foote explained. “Our preparation was key, both physically and mentally, and I think our conditioning was outstanding. The team’s conditioning staff deserve praise for their hard work.”

Tactical masterclass
The victory wasn’t just about physical dominance – the Junior Boks showcased tactical maturity that belied their age. Foote was particularly impressed with how his team executed their game plan against the traditionally shrewd Australians.
“We executed our plans perfectly and adapted well under pressure,” he said. “We balanced our kicking and running game well, and our leadership on the field was calm and composed. The boys made mature decisions under pressure, which was crucial.”
Despite the comprehensive victory, captain Riley Norton was quick to temper expectations as the team prepares for their next challenge – defending champions England on Friday.
“It was a great win against a quality Australian side, but we can improve on certain areas,” Norton said. “It is just one game under our belts, and we want to learn and continuously improve as the tournament progresses.”
The lock forward, who had an outstanding game himself, emphasized the team’s grounded approach: “I’m glad for the win and very excited for the forthcoming challenges, which will require thorough preparation and review.”
England next
The Junior Boks’ next test comes against England, who opened their campaign with a 56-19 victory over Scotland. The defending champions will provide a significant step up in competition when the teams clash at 18:00 in Rovigo on Friday 4 July.
With both senior and junior Springbok teams firing on all cylinders, South African rugby appears to be in a golden period. The question now is whether the Junior Boks can maintain this momentum and follow their heroes all the way to championship glory.
The match kicks off at 18:00 local time in Rovigo, with the Junior Boks looking to continue their perfect start to the tournament.
