South African filmmakers can now apply for a free AI film making programme launched by The Akuna Group, the entertainment company founded by actor Idris Elba.

His company, The Akuna Group, has launched a free programme called Akuna Learning. The aim is to help creators across Africa tell their stories on screen using artificial intelligence.

Applications for the programme opened on 26 October 2026. South Africans, along with residents of Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, are invited to apply.

The project, “From Script to Screen with AI”, is a partnership with Google and is backed by US$1 million (R16 661 250) from Google.org. The training material comes from Curious Refuge, an online school run by Shelby and Caleb Ward, who have more than ten years’ experience in visual effects.
Elba says the programme is about learning and access. “This is about access to courses that help educate creators across the continent to tell their stories,” he explains.

Storytelling

Anyone interested in visual storytelling can apply. This includes filmmakers, screenwriters, animators, advertisers, digital content creators, photographers, designers, editors and visual artists. There is no need for previous experience with AI or a film school qualification.

The programme takes participants through every step of filmmaking with AI. It starts with a foundation course. After that, participants can focus on fiction, documentary, animation, advertising or screenwriting. The journey begins with an open call for applications, which closes on 15 November 2026. Those selected will join a twelve-week online training course, with support from Akuna facilitators and in-person meet-ups in each country.

Make a film

After the training, graduates can submit their own film ideas. Shortlisted candidates will form teams and receive mentorship from industry experts. Teams that stand out will pitch their projects to panels from Akuna, Google and the wider industry. The best projects will get funding to make their films. These films will be produced with creative and technical support and will be showcased in October 2027.

One important detail is that creators keep full ownership of their work. The organisers and partners will not claim any rights over the films.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old and live in one of the five participating countries. They need a laptop, reliable internet and consistent power. They must also be able to commit to the twelve-week academy and, if chosen, to the later stages.

Applications are open online at https://AkunaLearning.com until 15 November 2026.
