Worker’s fatal burn injuries at a fast-food outlet on UFS campus probed

BLOEMFONTEIN – The University of the Free State has confirmed that the fatal incident involving Thandiwe Solane, who suffered critical burn injuries while working at fast-food outlet Chick’s ‘n Wings, is the subject of an investigation. This followed a Nova News enquiry concerning the incident, which occurred last Wednesday – 1 July. The deceased worked at the fast-food outlet, which is one of the tenants operating on the university’s campus in Bloemfontein.

Acting university spokesperson Dr Nitha Ramnath said the institution was engaging with the fast-food tenant regarding the incident and cooperating with the investigation. “The university is engaging with the tenant and relevant internal stakeholders to establish the facts and to ensure that all applicable health and safety requirements are appropriately addressed. The university is cooperating fully with these processes,” she said.

“As the retail outlet is operated by an independent tenant, it would be inappropriate for the university to comment on the circumstances surrounding the incident or to speculate on its cause while the investigations are underway,” said Ramnath, adding that Solane sustained burn injuries on 1 July while at the retail outlet and passed away four days later as a result of those injuries.

“Out of respect for the deceased, her family and the integrity of the investigative process, the university is unable to provide further comment at this stage,” said Ramnath.

The fast-food outlet is located at Thakaneng Bridge Student Centre on the campus and has remained closed for business since the incident took place. The woman succumbed to her injuries on Sunday at Busamed Hospital, a local private healthcare facility. The circumstances surrounding the incident and the cause of her death are the subject of an ongoing investigation.

Those who knew the deceased and happened to work with her reacted with shock to news of her tragic death. “I worked with her for two years. She was a very strong woman and very good with all the people. I am very sad for this tragedy. She was always kind and respectful. May she rest in peace. My condolences to her family,” said Nassimo Ben.
