Summer-Joy soars to new heights by obtaining a private flying licence

Summer-Joy Hendriks (20) from Worcester has soared to new heights by obtaining her private flying licence at the Cape Town Flight Training Centre

An inspiring account of determination and ambition is that of Summer-Joy Hendriks (20) of Worcester, who has soared to new heights by obtaining her private flying licence (PPL).

With dreams as vast as the skies themselves, she has set her sights on aviation, propelled by a passion ignited in her childhood.

Matriculating from Worcester Gymnasium in 2021, Hendriks’ journey into aviation began long before she ever set foot in a cockpit.

Her aspirations began early when she started travelling as a young sportsperson aged 9 years old.

“I was a South African gymnast, and I’d travel between Johannesburg and Durban. One day I came back from Johannesburg and I told my mom I wanted to be a flight attendant when I was older. She replied, ‘Why a flight attendant when you can fly the aircraft yourself?’

“It was from that day onwards that I decided I was going to fly planes. Now I’m living my childhood dream.”

Hendriks’ journey to the skies led her to the Cape Town Flight Training Centre, where she dedicated a year and a half to her aviation education.

Along the way she encountered numerous challenges, but remained resolute in her pursuit.

“There were a lot of ups and downs, but I pushed through them all,” she affirmed.

On the cusp of acquiring her commercial licence, Hendriks is toying with the idea of joining Qantas, the esteemed Australian airline renowned for its exceptional service and safety standards.

“My parents were always there for me. They were a huge encouragement. They allowed me to live my childhood dream.”

In recognition of her remarkable achievement, the Breede Valley Municipality extended an invitation to Hendriks who, as a newly certified pilot holding a private licence, is now authorised to rent aircraft and carry non-paying passengers for leisure flying, both locally and internationally.

“I never saw this day coming. I’m amazed to be invited by the council.”

Undeterred by challenges, she remains steadfast in her pursuit of excellence, currently enrolled in a Commercial Pilot Licence programme to further her career goals.

“My advice for young people like me is to study and work hard and not give up even in the face of adversity. Money follows the vision.”

Hendriks spoke of her own journey of perseverance and dedication, and her unwavering determination and boundless enthusiasm.

She holds that the sky is not the limit; it’s just the beginning!
