The Mandela Walk To Freedom event will take place on 11 February 2023 at Drakenstein Correctional Facility outside Paarl.

This event marks the 33rd anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s historic release from Victor Verster Prison (now the Drakenstein Correctional Facility), ending his walk to freedom after 27 years of incarceration.

For the serious runner there is the scenic revised 27 km run/walk (symbolic of the number of years spent in jail by the former President). For the less adventurous, there will be 10 km run/walk or the more leisurely 5km Freedom Route.

Come and enjoy the family fun day of sports, history and entertainment.

You will walk/run along the same route that was taken by Madiba as he left prison, from the Madiba house to the Madiba statue at the entrance of the prison.

The 27 km run starts at 06:30 followed by the 10 km run set to start at 07:00. The 5 km freedom route will start at 07:30.

Entry fees are R190 for licensed runners, which includes a timing chip, and R260 for unlicensed runners, 10 km licensed R120 and R170 for unlicensed

The 5 km run/walk will cost R50 and for under 18s R30.

T-shirts for the road race will be sold online at R250
