A man has ben arrested for reckless driving at the Huguenot Toll Plaza near Paarl.

A reckless driver has been apprehended following a high-speed incident at the Huguenot Toll Plaza, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Western Cape Provincial Traffic authorities, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The arrest follows an investigation into an incident captured on camera on 10 November, where the suspect was seen engaging in dangerous and reckless driving, including performing wheel spins at the toll plaza.

After identifying the driver, Provincial Traffic officials, supported by SAPS, tracked the individual down, leading to their swift arrest. The driver has since been released on a warning and will appear in court to face charges. The arrest was carried out by the Provincial Traffic Special Operations Unit, who have been praised for their professionalism and quick response.

Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku praised the efforts of law enforcement, emphasising the commitment of the provincial government to ensure the safety of all road users. “The safety of everyone on the road is our top priority,” said Sileku.

“Reckless driving, such as the dangerous spinning seen at public facilities, not only jeopardises the life of the driver but also endangers other innocent road users. As we approach the festive season, we urge all motorists to respect traffic laws and drive responsibly. Our traffic officers will continue to be vigilant and ensure that people get to their destinations safely.”

The Western Cape Government has reiterated its commitment to road safety, urging the public to report reckless or negligent driving and adhere to traffic regulations. With the holiday season approaching, traffic authorities will be increasing patrols across the province to ensure compliance with road safety rules and to prevent further dangerous driving incidents.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” Sileku added. “Together, we can help save lives and ensure safer roads for all.”
