Severe weather conditions struck the Western Cape province on 11 July causing significant disruption in the Breede Valley municipal area. Excessive rainfall led to the overflow of a dam near the informal settlement of Magwaleni, resulting in widespread flooding and displacement of residents.
The torrential rains caused substantial damage, particularly in the Magwaleni informal settlement. The overflow from the dam swept through homes, forcing many residents to evacuate. In response to this crisis the Unobuntu Thusong Service Centre promptly provided emergency shelter and assistance to those affected.
The humanitarian relief efforts were made possible through the generous support and collaboration of numerous individuals and organisations. These combined efforts ensured immediate needs were met and the displaced residents received the necessary care and support during this challenging time.
“Unobuntu Thusong Service Centre has been instrumental in providing swift and effective relief to those affected by the flooding,” said Lizo Paul, centre manager. “The community’s response has been overwhelming, with many coming forward to help.”
As the community continues to recover from the severe weather, ongoing support and collaboration will be essential to help affected families rebuild their lives. The incident highlights the importance of preparedness and community solidarity in the face of natural disasters.
For those wishing to contribute to the relief efforts donations can be made through the Unobuntu Thusong Service Centre’s official channels.
