An auction of a whole different kind takes place on Saturday 27 May, when plenty of birds of a feather will be put on sale at the Overberg Parrot Club’s auction in Rawsonville.Foto:

The Overberg Parrot Club is hosting its second annual parrot auction this weekend.

Based in Villiersdorp, it serves members throughout the Boland and surrounding areas. Club members are parrot enthusiasts who breed parrots as a hobby or, for some who do it as an additional form of income, supplementing their salaries.

“To try and sum up the club’s goals briefly would be to say members assist one another in developing and growing in this great hobby by sharing best practice and regular club functions and activities.

“No members collection is too big or too small for them to participate in our club activities,” explained Guy van Zyl of the club.

In 2021 the members explored the option of hosting a parrot auction, as there were regular auctions taking place in other provinces, but no such offering was made to breeders and enthusiasts in the Western Cape.

Due to the central location of the Eike Saal, just outside Rawsonville, as well as the purpose-fit layout of the hall, the club’s first auction was held in Rawsonville in 2022.

The 2022 auction had a modest 96 lots, and more than 20 species of parrots on offer. The inaugural auction’s success was the achieved sale percentage of just over 92% of the lots that were on offer.

“The 2023 auction taking place on the Saturday 27 May has more than 130 lots on offer and promises to be the best auction of 2023 in South Africa.”
