As the final deadline for South Africa’s census count was reached on Tuesday (31 May), around 81% of households in the province have been counted.
The 2022 census deadline has been moved several times this year, as counting was riddled with setbacks and progress was much slower than anticipated. Western Cape Premier Alan Winde urged residents continuously to get counted, to ensure the province is allocated its share of resources from the national budget.
“We must ensure an accurate count so we receive our fair share of the budget amid a growing population and a constrained fiscal environment,” he said.
“If we do not achieve an accurate count we risk placing our ability to deliver key services, particularly in education and healthcare, at risk.”
Of those counted by Stats SA by Tuesday:. 73% were counted by field officers;. 8% were counted online;. 12% of field counting remained in progress;. 3% of online counting remained in progress; and. 4% were outstanding.
In a statement released this week, Winde said Statistics South Africa would now embark on an exercise of verifying their count of households in the province.
