One of the Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve’s staff members was killed while on duty this week, when he was trampled by an elephant.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the tragic death of one of our staff members at Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve. On 1 May, Kabelo Botha Mashao was fatally injured by an elephant that had been at Inverdoorn for approximately 15 years already,” reads a press release issued by Inverdoorn management today (2 May).
The reserve is situated in the Ceres Karoo between Ceres and Sutherland.
The game reserve expressed their condolences with Mashao’s family.
“We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Mashao family, his friends, and co-workers during this difficult time.”
Staff at the reserve are also receiving support during this time.
“We are providing support to our staff and all those affected by this terrible loss. The safety and well-being of our staff, guests, and wildlife is of the utmost importance to us. We ask that the privacy of the family and staff be respected during this difficult time. We can not provide any further comments at this stage until the investigation is complete.”
At this stage it is still unclear exactly how the incident occurred.
