Tulbagh police have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of Siyamthanda Dastile on Sunday 23 July.
According to the Tulbagh police, Dastile was attacked at 05:00 on Sunday morning while walking home from a friend. He was stabbed twice in his left leg before going back to his friend’s place and was later taken to Ceres Hospital, where he died.
Dastile, a well-known resident of Tulbagh, was involved in various community projects and organisations. Social media were flooded with messages of people expressing shock and sadness over his senseless death.
His aunt, Xoliswa Dastile, described him as a good person and that the family had lost a star.
“The family is heartbroken over losing him, especially in this way,” she told Standard last week.
“In his family he was a star and always helped them whenever they needed it. It is not easy to lose him like this.”
The local police’s investigation into the murder led them to a 50-year-old man. He was subsequently arrested and appeared in court last week, and again on Tuesday 1 August.
His case has been postponed until Monday 14 August for a bail application.
