Family, friends, and colleagues from the creative industry gathered at Siyafuneka Primary in Zwelethemba on Saturday to bid farewell to acclaimed theatre and television actor, writer and director Lulamile Richard Nikani.

Known for his excellent multi-dimensional depiction of characters on stage and television, he died last week at age 55 after a short illness.

Industry colleagues and friends shared their memories of the renowned multi-talented artist throughout his career, characterising him as a man of integrity and an ardent lover of his craft.

They paid a moving tribute the best way they knew how, through song and poetry.

Multi-award-winning actors Mbulelo Grootboom and Bongile Mantsai were among the mourners at the service.

The father of two was a prominent feature, acting and directing at, among others, the Baxter Theatre and Artscape in Cape Town and the National Arts Festival in Makanda, to mention a few.

Nikani obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Fine Arts from the University of Fort Hare and an Honours from UCT, and he was pursuing his Master’s degree.

Next week a public memorial celebrating his life will be held at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
