An operation by police, with the help of helicopters overhead, yielded five suspects on Tuesday.

“With the aim of ensuring the safety and security of the community of Worcester a joint operation was conducted, involving Worcester police, the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU), Breederivier K9, Public Order Policing (POP), the Economic Infrastructure Task Team (EITT), Air Wing and local Law Enforcement, which led to the arrest of five suspects for possession of firearms without licence and possession of drugs,” Warrant Officer Vathiswa Jacibs, spokesperson for the Worcester police, related.

Helicopters could be seen flying low and slow over certain areas of Worcester about 11:00 on Tuesday.

“This operation was executed in OVD and Riverview in Worcester, where various places were searched at the same time by different groups. In OVD, a firearm – a double-barrelled shotgun – wrapped in plastic was found in the garage of a house that was searched. One suspect was arrested for possession without licence. Another group searched more houses in the area, and three suspects were arrested for possession of Mandrax, dagga and tik.” Another executed warrants in a different part of town and made even more arrests.

“A different group went and executed search warrants in Yssel Street, Riverview, where one suspect was arrested for possession of drugs. Police officers also searched a shack in OVD. No-one was home, but two generators and six bicycles were found in the dwelling. All items were booked in.”

The five suspects were expected to appear at the Worcester Magistrates’ Court once they had been charged.
