A young and thriving hockey player from Montagu needs the assistance of the community to make her dream come true.
Lynique van Wyk, a learner at Montagu High School, was scouted by the Elsie Coetzer Hockey School to travel to the Netherlands to play hockey in September.
Coetzer is a former national hockey player who has since taken up coaching and has a hockey academy.
“I could not believe it then and I still cannot believe it now,” said Lynique about her selection to the academy.
The trip to the Netherlands is due to take place in October and the cost is about R45 000.
The Van Wyk family has made great strides in raising funds to make the young girl’s dream come true.
“We have made good progress as we have passed the halfway mark, but we still need the assistance of the community,” said Lyndon van Wyk, Lynique’s father.
“I am very proud of her especially after what she went through in the past year.”
The girl lost her mother and grandmother in the space of a year, but this did not stand in her way of reaching her goal.
She said the prospect of her future is what keeps her going.
“I also want to coach hockey one day,” Lynique said.
Despite all the heartache endured over the past year, the avid hockey player also made it to the Boland hockey team.
She will be in Stellenbosch this week with her Boland team as they participate in the IPT tournament.
“I am also excited to be in Stellenbosch because it is my first time in the regional side, and I hope to acquire more skills and just have fun with the team.”
