A Worcester company has won the sustainable-energy category in the latest Climate 360 contest.

Alien Fuel entered the contest and presented their products, which can be used to fuel various machinery in place of fuel, paraffin or diesel.

“We were one of three finalists,” Rein van der Horst, chair of the board, pointed out. “We won our category – Sustainable Energy – and was invited to Brussels and Paris to present our product.”

The Alien Fuel Group uses wood products to produce various sustainable products. According to its website, its system converts alien invasive species and other forms of wood waste into a solid form of biomass fuel.

“We make briquettes, which can be used to fuel steam burners. We also make products in the form of cork and rabbit feet.

“All of these can be used as substitutes for other fuels,” explains Van der Horst.

The company was founded in 2015 and opened in Worcester in 2017 and is situated on the Ceres Road. Van Der Horst has been the chairperson of the board since last year.

In a speech after the company was announced as the winner, he said: “I believe this product is going to be a big game changer for us and for South Africa.”

He further explained the team at Alien Fuel were all extremely proud that their hard work had garnered this win and opportunity for them.

The company was also invited to participate in the first Climate 360 winners’ study tour in Brussels, Belgium and Paris from 28 May to 4 June. Van Horst also explains its products are a more cost-effective and greener option.

“Not only is our product cheaper, but it is also CO2-neutral and is a replacement for fossil fuel. Our products can be used with various machinery such as steamers, boilers or burners.”
