Foster parents were celebrated at an event held by Child Welfare Worcester at the town hall.

Child Welfare Worcester awarded foster care parents for their open hearts, caring and support of the children in a special awards ceremony in the town hall.

The ceremony was held last Friday for foster parents that have served five years and more in foster children’s lives.

According to the organisation, children in the Breede Valley are confronted daily with stress due to social circumstances, poverty, child neglect and abuse.

“Children are removed from parents and families due to child neglect and abuse, they are placed into safety and then by court order placed into foster care for two years. These children are from newborns to 18 years old,” says a spokesperson for Child Welfare.

Foster care parents are people within the community that open their hearts and homes without knowing these children’s circumstances and with no financial support. They receive a basic foster care grant. They offer these children love, support, and care, financial and educational support.

Child Welfare Worcester is an NGO that deals with approximately 600 foster care parents under the supervision of four social workers.

They assist these parents with social welfare only, but cannot help them financially, or with items such as clothing, food or extra needs for the children.

“We hope the event to be an annual institution as a token of appreciation towards our foster care parents. We would like to thank these parents for the awesome work they are doing with and for our children, as we have experienced many successful stories. A special vote of thanks to our keynote speakers from Cape Winelands District Municipality Minnie Petersen, foster care parent Anna Januarie and Luwatlin Malgas as MC.”

Childcare wishes to thank all those involved.
