The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM) Firefighter Training Academy in Stellenbosch has just qualified 26 new firefighters.
At a moving graduation ceremony Executive Mayor of the CWDM, Dr Elna von Schlicht commended the new emerging crop of personnel for their commitment to serve the common good through public safety.
Addressing the assembly, she emphasised the unique qualities required of aspiring firefighters, which include unwavering commitment, courage, resilience and an indomitable strength of character.
Von Schlicht commended the graduates for embodying these attributes and acknowledged the rigorous training they had undergone to reach this milestone.
The ceremony, marked by a grand parade and awe-inspiring drill demonstrations, showcased the graduates’ newfound skills. The CWDM Firefighter Training Academy took immense pride in presenting the accomplished individuals, who successfully completed the Firefighting I and II modules.
These dedicated firefighters represented various sectors, including the South African Navy, Cape Winelands District, Swartland, and Langeberg Municipalities.
The 12-week training programme encompassed both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical training.
One graduate, CWDM Firefighter Junaid Rass, shared his reflections on the journey. “When we began it felt as if success was beyond our reach,” he recalled.
“We struggled individually, but as we came together as a team we found motivation in one another, making even the most challenging tasks achievable!”
The graduation ceremony was a testament to the graduates’ unwavering dedication and the collaborative spirit they had cultivated throughout their training. It was a momentous occasion not only for the individuals involved but also for the communities they will serve.
